DayZ – Arma 2 Mod

May 17, 2012 in Gaming

This is a zombie mod that has been gaining rapid popularity. Play as one of the last remaining survivors of the zombie apocalypse. Scavenge for food and water, as well as weapons to fend off zombies….and other players.

To be honest, after having played for a while, the zombies are the least of your worries. The real issue is other players. They have a tendency to sneak up on you and shoot you in the back. Players you think you can trust will turn on you. You are better off shooting everyone you see asap before they shoot you. That’s my conclusion. I’ve spent enough time finding things only to be killed by some player shortly after. The other issue, is night time. It’s impossible to see, and the servers use world time. So if it’s night time for you, its night time in game. Not all servers are setup that way though, but most of them are. So if you play at night, you’ll be running around be chased by zombies you can’t even see.

This would be a much better mod, in my opinion, if it was done on a different game engine. Arma II is ok…but it’s really buggy to begin with and difficult to use. I’ve seen a lot of talk about Arma 3 and supposedly it should be a much better game than Arma 2 is. So I’m hopeful for that, aside from the need to buy another game to play the mod.

Ghost Recon Online Beta

May 9, 2012 in Gaming

I got a beta key. Going to download and start playing the Ghost Recon Online beta!

Haven’t played it yet, but after talking to someone who has, it is similar to Blacklight Retribution in a lot of ways when it comes to customization.Read a news article from Ubisoft on it and how there are already cheats for it. Fortunately, according to the article, they will be working on it diligently to prevent cheats though.

Looking forward to trying it out. Will update once I try it.

UPDATE:

Turns out my laptop can play the game. So here are my initial observations. At level one, everyone higher level is OP. Nice graphics, even at minimum. I didn’t see as much customization as I was told, it’s actually closer to being as customizable as BF3. Not a huge fan of how getting into a game worked…now, all of this is initial observation…but you don’t select a server, you simply click to find a match, and it puts you in a game. The one game I played, there were maybe 3 level 1 players, and then everyone else ranged from 2 up to I think level 30.

What I found interesting was how when you see someone and start shooting them, it puts a square box around them. If you’ve ever used cheats before, it’s basically the same thing as it drawing the 2d bounding boxes (except only when you can see them). Actually, some of the other things were similar to what cheats do. There were lines going to your team mates and you could see where they were through walls.

Friendly fire is turned on. I blew up a team mate with a grenade. It shows you the lob path of your grenade before you throw it and where it will land. I think that would take a little getting used to as normally I just whip out a grenade and throw it quickly, but with the display I seem to take more time to throw it.

Since the game is free, from my initial observations, it’s a really well done game so far. I’m sure it will be even better when I am playing it at max setting on my desktop PC. F2P FTW!

Dota 2 Beta

April 21, 2012 in Gaming

I’ve gotten into Dota 2 (beta). I’ve not been a huge fan of Dota to begin with, mostly because as far as I was concerned, it sucked. Guess that’s just the learning curve part of it…also crap team mates make for crap games. But, I’ve played enough to understand it better and have really enjoyed it.

The game is pretty well done. I don’t know if characters are supposed to have any balance to them, but it seems that some are more overpowered then others (or the player is just really good). For instance, Zeus has the ability to damage anyone, anywhere for up to nearly 500 dmg with his ultimate. That seems pretty op to me.

Some things that seem to be missing: The button to say “Fu** this, I quit” vote surrender. Because sometimes, the team you end up on is so bad, you wish you could team kill them for it. Simply quitting a match means you get dinged, and put into a low priority queue. And it takes up to 6-8 minutes to find a match then. Yeah, I’ve raged a match or two to find that out…

I tend to like it more than League of Legends, however I have hardly played LoL, so I can’t really say much about it, or the differences. If anyone plays it, add me on steam, systemAdmin. Could always use team mates.
